Create an assignment for your class

Click Open the assignment creator below. Under Assign to groups, click Choose groups and tick your class. Click outside the list to close it.

For your first assignment, select just one class. Later, you can select more classes together if they have the same level and program. Create a separate assignment for a different level or program.

In Title, enter Should school start later in the morning? for this practice task.

Copy the example below into Instructions / Prompt. For your own assignments, explain what students should write, what to include, and any required length. Leave student names out.

Click Type and choose Paragraph. In Max Grade (Points), enter 100. You can leave Due Date blank for practice.

This means the assignment is marked out of 100. Your rubric’s points must also add up to 100.

Scroll down to Grading Criteria & Rubric. This is the marking grid Refine will use when suggesting scores.

For practice, use Ideas and reasons (40 points), Organization (30), and Language (30). The guide below shows exactly how to edit the starting criteria, add a third criterion, and enter performance descriptions.

Click Live Preview near the top. Read the title, instructions, selected class, and rubric. Check that the rubric total is 100 points.

If anything needs changing, click Assignment Form to return to the fields. When ready, scroll to the bottom and click Create & Add Student Work.

The student-writing page opens. Check the class and assignment title before selecting a student label. Saved just now in the editor means your preparation was saved; you still need to click Create & Add Student Work to create the assignment.
