What you will finish
You will have one reviewed assessment, saved with your own feedback and grade, and a document ready to return.
Before you start
- Sign in to your teacher account. A laptop or desktop is easiest for your first try.
- Allow about 20–30 minutes to follow along. The reading time does not include time spent in the app.
- Use the fictional Practice class and sample writing below. You do not need any real student work. Keep this guide open in a second browser tab so you can return to each step.

Create a practice class
Open your dashboard using the link below. Click New Group. If your dashboard is empty, Create Group does the same thing.
Enter Practice class in Group Name. Choose Secondary 2 for Level and ESL for Program, then click Create Group.
Click Students. Choose Animals, enter 3 under How many students?, and click Generate class labels. You should see three labels. These are nicknames Refine uses instead of student names.
Set up the school-start-time assignment
Open the assignment creator using the link below. Under Assign to groups, tick Practice class, then click outside the list to close it.
Enter Should school start later in the morning? in Title. Copy the prompt below into Instructions / Prompt. Set Type to Paragraph and leave Max Grade (Points) at 100.
Scroll to Grading Criteria & Rubric. Use the rubric guide to set up Ideas and reasons (40 points), Organization (30), and Language (30), including descriptions for each performance level.
Click Live Preview to check the task. At the bottom, click Create & Add Student Work. The page for reviewing student writing opens.
Write a short opinion paragraph about whether school should start later in the morning. State your opinion, give two reasons, and respond to one possible objection. Finish with a concluding sentence.
Paste the practice paragraph
Choose one label in the student list on the left. Our example uses Fox; your labels may be different. Click Original above the writing area.
Select and copy the whole sample below, then paste it into the large text box. On Windows, use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste. On a Mac, use Command+C and Command+V.
Click Analyse with AI once. Wait for the corrections to appear. The rubric suggestions may take a little longer.
I think school should start later in the morning. Many teenagers feels tired during their first class. A later start would give us more time to sleep and help us concentrate. Some people worry that sports practice would finish too late. However, lunch could be a little shorter so the school day would not end much later. Last week, I was so tired that I forget my homework on the bus. Starting later could make the first lesson more useful.
Read and check the corrections
Click Highlighted to see the passages Refine has flagged. Under Error breakdown, click Grammar to read the explanations.
For example, “teenagers feels” should become “teenagers feel”. Read each sentence and decide whether the change is appropriate. Dismiss a suggestion only if you disagree with it.
Click Corrected. The box under Teacher’s Final Corrected Text is where you can edit the version you intend to return. Dismissing an error does not undo that correction in this box.
Write your feedback and enter a grade
In the panel on the right, find Teacher feedback. Type a short comment that names a strength and gives a useful next step. On a small screen, scroll below the writing to find the grading controls.
Read the Rubric scores and comments. Change scores where your reading of the text supports a different mark.
Enter your decision in Teacher’s final grade. The screenshot uses 78 out of 100 only as an example; you decide the mark. Leave this field blank if your review is unfinished.
Your opinion is clear and you consider sports practice. Add one classroom example to support your reasons. Then check the verbs in “teenagers feels” and “I forget”.
Save the grade and check it
Click Submit grade & next student. Refine saves your work and opens the next ungraded student.
Click the label you just assessed in the student list. Check that it says Graded and that your comment and final grade are still there. If a save error appears, click Retry and wait before leaving.
Download the feedback
Keep the assessed student selected. Click Export below the final grade. In Export Document, choose PDF, then Concise. This includes highlighted writing, your feedback, and the grade.
Click Export inside the dialog. Open the downloaded file from your browser’s downloads list or your Downloads folder.
Check the student label, assignment title, comment, and grade. You can then print it or return it through your usual classroom platform. Refine does not send the file to the student.
Check your result
- The text belongs to the selected generated label.
- You reviewed the corrections and wrote your own final feedback.
- Your final grade is saved and the assessment is marked Graded.
- The exported document contains the sections you intended to share.
If something looks different
I do not see any students in the workspace.
Return to the selected group's Students tab and generate class labels. Check that the assignment belongs to the group you intended to use.
My AI result does not match this example.
Generated suggestions can vary. The examples demonstrate how to review a result, not a required set of corrections or a model grade. Keep the assignment instructions and actual writing as your reference.

Complete one practice text before adding a whole class. You can return to any guide whenever you need it.
